Welcome all,
Some of you may have come across this newsletter through the Substack app, or you may have recently subscribed through one of my social media channels. Whichever the case, I’m delighted that you’ve tuned in.
One of the things that I love most is photography! To introduce myself a little to those who do not already know me. My name is Don MacDonell, and I fell in love with photography after moving to Seoul, South Korea, with my family. While living there, I was highly interested in learning about a new culture, traditions, and exploring a new place. It wasn’t long before I purchased my first DSLR camera and started learning about various forms of photography.
For me, exploring and documenting were what I enjoyed most. Online, with social media, I stumbled across some information on what was called ‘street photography’. There were various communities that I participated in and learned from. However, what suits me most is not what I would consider ‘street’, but rather street/documentary-style photography, exploring and documenting what I find interesting. I also honed my editing style. A very raw, real style with minimal editing, outside of using a high-contrast, black and white. (Minimal editing, meaning it normally takes a few seconds to edit my RAW images.)
This journey of mine has been ongoing since 2014, with over 130,000 images. I’ve since returned to Ontario, Canada (in 2023), but the journey continues.
The idea of The Photo Memoirs was to share a personal journal of my photography. Share my experiences, insights, tips, and photography. But my goals go beyond that! I want to help aspiring photographers of any level. I would like to do my part in inspiring the next generation of photographers. And so, I introduce you to The Photography Mentoring Program.
The online requirement for this program is to be subscribed to The Photo Memoirs, here through this site. I will be sending information about this program through this newsletter. It will include sharing inspiration, tips, and some of my own experiences. I will also be inviting you to share your experiences and photography; thereafter, I will provide feedback and suggestions. In addition, I will be scheduling Zoom conferences where we can have discussions on topics that are of interest to you.
At any time, you may reach out to me through Social Media or Substack. You may also reply to any of these newsletters, even this one, to share your experiences or photographs with me.
In fact, I’ll invite you to do so now.
Please reply to this email:
Tell me a little about yourself and your photography! (Feel Free to share a photo or two, or a social media account).
What do you hope to learn from this Mentoring Program?
I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Don MacDonell
